Team Jamaica put up a fight against Greece in Davis Cup Group 2

This past weekend the Jamaica tennis team competed in their Group 2 Davis Cup match up against Greece. The team members were: Blaise Bicknell, Rowland ‘Randy’ Phillips, Jacob Bicknell, Daniel Azar and Cliff Dwyer. They are coached by Dominic Pagon.

Results

The teams played a total of 5 matches. The aim was to reach 3 wins before the other team.

Day 1 moved in favour of team Jamaica. Blaise and Randy, Jamaica’s number 1 and 2 seeds, won their matches against their Greek opponents.

In match 1, Randy Phillips beat Michail Pervolarakis, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and in match 2 Blaise took the win, 6-3, 7-5 against Petros Tsitsipas.

Unfortunately, Jamaica’s momentum broke down during day 2 of gameplay when Greece’s doubles team won their match, 6-2, 6-3.

Match 4 saw Aristotelis Thanos winning his match against Blaise Bicknell, 6-4, 6-4. This win by Greece tied the overall score at 2-2.

Therefore, match 5 had to be played to decide which team would qualify for the next round.

Petros Tsitsipas won the 3rd point for Greece in his match against Randy Phillips, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The final score was 3-2. Greece has advanced to the next round of the group 2 competition and Jamaica has been relegated to group 3.
