Round 1 Roundup
Roland Garros, otherwise known as the French Open, is the only clay court Grand Slam competition. Here are the Round 1 highlights:
Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal advance to Round 2.
Naomi Osaka eliminated from the tournament.

Men’s Competition

It was smooth sailing for seed No.6 Carlos Alcaraz Garfia who took his first round match against Juan Ignacio Londero in straight sets. Seed No.3 Alexander Zverev followed suit winning his first round match also in straight sets.
World number 1, Novak Djokovic, won his match 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 against Yoshihito Nishioka to move onto Round 2.
The Spaniard, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, advanced to Round 2 by beating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 77-65. Seed No.9 Felix Auger Aliassime beat Juan Pablo Varillas after a 5 set match which ended, 2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.
Seed No.23 John Isner, seed No. 18 Grigor Dimitrov and seed No.15 Diego Scwartzman all made it past their first round opponents to secure a spot in the 2nd round.
Rafael Nadal secured his spot in Round 2 by winning his match in straight sets against the Aussie Jordan Thompson. Seed Number 27 Sebastian Korda, Sebastian Baez and Taylor Fritz also advanced to Round 2.
Seed No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas went the distance with Lorenzo Musetti, but came out on top winning the final 3 sets, 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Seed No. 11, Jannik Sinner, Seed No. 12 Hubert Hurkacz and seed No. 24 Frances Tiafoe all advanced to the 2nd round winning their matches in straight sets.
Seed No. 8 Casper Ruud defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to move on to Round 2 and Daniil Medvedev delivered a clean performance to advance to round 2 in straight sets against Facundo Bagnis.

Major Upsets (Men's Competition)
Seed No. 17 Reilly Opelka fell to the unseeded Filip Krajinoivć, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Pablo Carreño Busta, seed No. 16, was eliminated by Gilles Simon after a 5 set battle.
Holger Rune eliminated seed No. 14 Denis Shapovalov from the French Open in straight sets.
Women’s Competition
- Round 1 Roundup
No. 17 seed Leylah Fernandez advanced to the Round 2 after dealing a straight set blow to Kristina Mladenovic. Seed No. 18 Coco Gauff followed suit also winning her match in straight sets.
Seed No. 4 Maria Sakkari made it to round 2 after beating Clara Burel, 6-2, 6-3. Aliaksandra Sasnovich advanced to round 2 after eliminating Wang Xinyu 6-4, 6-1.
Seed No. 22 Madison Keys, seed No. 16 Elena Rybakina and seed No. 21 Angelique Kerber all advanced to Round 2.
Iga Swiatek, seed No. 1, advanced to round 2 after dealing a straight set defeat to Lesia Tsurenko. US Open Champion, Emma Raducanu, advanced to round 2 after beating Linda Nosková, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1.Â
Seed No. 15 Victoria Azarenka, seed No. 32 Petra Kvitová and seed No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka, all advanced to Round 2 of the French Open.
Seed No. 27 Amanda Anisimova defeated former world number 1, Naomi Osaka, to secure her spot in the next round.
Seed No. 3 Paula Badosa ended Fiona Ferro’s chances of advancing to Round 2 by dealing a straight set defeat. The American, Danielle Collins advanced to round 2 winning her match against Viktoriya Tomova, 6-0, 6-4.

Major Upset’s (Women's Competition)
Kaia Kanepi defeated seed No. 10 Garbiñe Muguruza after a 3 set match which ended 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. No. 5 seed Anett Kontaveit fell to Ajla Tomljanić. The score was 7-6, 7-5. Â
Seed No. 2 Barbora Krejcikova fell to France’s Diane Parry.
Retirement Alert
Jo-Wilfried announced before the French Open that this would be his last professional bout. His career was stricken with injuries and the best of him was often eclipsed by the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The loss to Casper Ruud was his last professional singles match, but on Thursday he will play alongside Richard Gasquet for his last professional doubles match. Â
